The 8 Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Belgium
17.10.2026 · Jonas Van Eylen

Belgium is not a mountain country, but we do have waterfalls. In the Ardennes and the East Cantons, streams tumble over rocks, through deep wooded valleys and past castles. After a few rainy days in autumn they are at their best: wild, loud and surrounded by golden leaves. Pull on your Fall Creek Hoodie, with a waterfall over mossy rocks, and discover the 8 most beautiful waterfalls in Belgium, with a walk at each one.
1. Reinhardstein Waterfall (Waimes)
The highest in Belgium. According to Paris Match, the Reinhardstein waterfall, at around 60 metres, is the highest in the country. Here the Ru du Chèneu and the Warche meet, close to the fairytale Reinhardstein Castle.
Walking: the foot of the waterfall can be reached for free via walking paths. A lovely loop starts from Ovifat (around 8.5 km, easy). You can park at the Robertville dam. Please note: some footbridges are narrow and offer little protection.
2. Cascade de Coo (Stavelot)
The best known in Belgium. Here the Amblève drops about 15 metres in the village of Coo. Few people know that the waterfall is partly man-made. Centuries ago, the monks of Stavelot Abbey diverted the river to power a mill and to prevent flooding.
Walking: the waterfall can be visited all year round. Walking paths run through the Amblève valley, and there are cafés nearby. As early as the 19th century, Belgian painters came here to find inspiration.
3. The Ninglinspo and the Cascade de la Chaudière (Aywaille)
The only true mountain stream in Belgium. The Ninglinspo plunges steeply through a narrow valley, with small waterfalls and natural bathing pools such as the "Bain de Vénus". The highlight is the Cascade de la Chaudière, which falls about ten metres into the "Bain de Diane".
Walking: a walk of around 6 km (about 2 hours 45 minutes), with plenty of climbs and descents, wooden footbridges and stepping stones. You park along the N633 between Remouchamps and Trois-Ponts, at Sedoz. In summer, up to 1,000 visitors a day come here, so preferably come on a weekday or outside the high season. There is no official swimming area: swimming and jumping into the pools is discouraged.
4. The Chefna (Aywaille)
The wild sister of the Ninglinspo. Right next to the Ninglinspo flows the Chefna, with small waterfalls in a much quieter valley. You will meet fewer people here.
Walking: you can combine the Ninglinspo and the Chefna in one walk. In a single day, you see both the busy and the wild face of this region.
A walk along a churning stream reminds us of the Silver Run Sweatshirt, with a salmon swimming against the current.
5. Cascade du Bayehon (Ovifat)
The second most important waterfall in Belgium, after Coo. The Bayehon drops about 9 metres over red rocks into a large basin, at around 510 metres altitude, on the edge of the High Fens.
Walking: a loop of around 14 km through the wild valley, or a 16 km trek from the Bayehon to Reinhardstein Castle. This way you combine two waterfalls in one day. Because the Bayehon lies close to the High Fens, it is best to check botrange.be in advance to see which paths are open after the August 2026 fire. You can read more about the area in our article on hiking in the High Fens.
6. The Hoëgne Waterfalls (Jalhay)
A whole series of waterfalls. The Promenade de la Hoëgne follows a fast-flowing stream past the Marie-Henriette and Léopold II cascades, inaugurated in 1899, and dozens of wooden footbridges. In the nearby Statte valley lies the Cascade des Nutons, the waterfall of the gnomes.
Walking: the paths run over rocks and roots and are often muddy. The walk to the Cascade des Nutons is around 9 km long and starts in Solwaster.
7. Cascade de Chanxhe (Sprimont)
A hidden gem near Liège. A smaller, quiet waterfall in the woods of Sprimont.
Walking: a loop of around 10 km (about 3 hours) via the "Croix Verte" route. If you want to keep it shorter, park on the Rue du Pont, near the ruins of Fays Castle.
8. Bérismenil Waterfall (La Roche-en-Ardenne)
A peaceful forest walk. At Bérismenil, close to La Roche, you follow a stream through the forest, with small waterfalls and wooden footbridges.
Walking: a short walk of around 4.6 km, starting at the church of Bérismenil. Ideal to combine with a visit to La Roche or one of the best viewpoints in the Ardennes.
When Are Waterfalls at Their Best?
- After rain: the more it rains, the more water there is. Go one or two days after a good downpour.
- In autumn: the autumn colours make them even more beautiful. For tips on seeing the forest at its best, read the 7 most beautiful autumn forests in Belgium.
- In spring: after winter, the streams are often high.
Staying Safe on the Trail
- Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip: rocks, roots and wooden footbridges are very slippery when wet.
- Stay on the paths and do not climb over the rocks next to the waterfall.
- Visit outside the high season, especially at the Ninglinspo.
- Bring a rain jacket: in the valleys, the weather can change quickly. You can find more tips in our article on hiking in the rain.
