Sliding open the door of your campervan and waking up with a view of a forest or a river: vanlife is more popular than ever. With a motorhome, a converted van or a roof tent you have all the freedom in the world. But what are the rules in Belgium? Can you park up anywhere to sleep? The short answer: staying overnight is often allowed, camping is not.

Staying overnight is not the same as camping

That distinction matters:

  • Staying overnight means you park your campervan legally and sleep in it. In the eyes of the law, your campervan is then simply a parked vehicle.
  • Camping means you "set up": chairs and a table outside, the awning rolled out, a barbecue or a drying rack. That is not allowed on public roads.

As long as your campervan looks like an ordinary parked vehicle from the outside, you're usually fine.

Where can you stay overnight?

On public roads and car parks

If there's no prohibition sign, in most municipalities you can sleep one night in a car park or on the street, as long as you:

  • are parked legally;
  • don't obstruct traffic;
  • don't stay longer than about 24 hours.

Note: many municipalities, especially on the coast and in tourist areas, have their own regulations or a ban on campervans. So always check the signs.

At motorhome stopovers

The best choice. Belgium has plenty of motorhome stopovers (aires): designated spots for campervans, often free or cheap. Some have water, electricity, toilets and a disposal point for your chemical toilet. Apps like park4night help you find them fast.

At a campsite

Want to put your chairs outside, stay a few days or have a hot shower? Then a campsite is the right place.

On private land

With the owner's permission, you can stay on private land. Many farmers and winegrowers offer a spot for campervans through dedicated networks.

Where is it not allowed?

  • In nature, in forests or in fields: wild camping, including with a campervan, is prohibited in Belgium.
  • In bivouac zones: these are meant for hikers and cyclists with a tent, not for vehicles. Read more about bivouac zones in our article on wild camping in Belgium.
  • Where there's a prohibition sign, or where municipal regulations forbid it.

Tips for your first campervan road trip

  1. Plan your overnight spots in advance, especially in high season. A stopover that's already full at 5 pm is no exception.
  2. Leave no trace. Take your rubbish with you and only empty your toilet and waste water at designated points.
  3. Be discreet. A quiet car park on the edge of a village is better than a busy spot right in the centre.
  4. Be considerate of the neighbours. Don't leave the engine running, no music late at night.
  5. Bring warm clothes. Even in summer the nights can be chilly, and on a bench by the water in the evening a warm hoodie or sweatshirt is no luxury.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sleep in your campervan on the street in Belgium?

Yes, usually, for one night, if you're parked legally and no ban applies. Camping outside (chairs, table, awning) isn't allowed on public roads.

Is wild camping with a campervan allowed in Belgium?

No. Staying overnight with a campervan in nature, in forests or in fields is not allowed. Use motorhome stopovers, campsites or private land with permission.

How long can a campervan stay on the street?

It varies by municipality, but assume a maximum of about 24 hours in the same spot, unless other rules apply.
